What’s in the name?

Stuart has an affinity with the name Solferino, having lived for a number of years in a street called Via Solferino in the historic centre of Milan.

Solferino is also a small town in Northern Italy. On this site the Battle of Solferino was fought some 150 years ago, and it became the catalyst for the creation of two highly significant outcomes:

  • The unification process that culminated in the formation of Italy; and

  • The creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross by Swiss humanitarian Henry Dunant, who under difficult circumstances devised and secured universal support for a code that would save many lives in future years.

The methodical, innovative and collaborative approach used to realise these outcomes inspired Stuart to adopt the name Solferino, and to strive to emulate these traits.
